Former Managing Director of Polaris Bank, Innocent Ike, and the Iyalode of Lagos, Mrs Bintu Fatima Tinubu, have tasked the organisers of Golfsixses tournament to work diligently to lift the standard of the competition, which caters for elders and retirees.

Speaking at the end of the 2023 Golfsixses tournament at the Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos, they also urged the organisers to ensure that the event takes into consideration the peculiar needs of the participants.

Tinubu, who featured in the competition, described the tournament as a “unique tournament for the elders and retirees, who have paid their dues for the game.” She added, “it’s only natural that they are remembered and honoured in a unique way as this Golfsixses tournament.

“Although, this is my first time to participate in the tournament, I love everything I have observed about it; it’s a game to help keep the body and soul physically, mentally, and emotionally alert and more people should come and be part of it.

“My advice for the organisers is that they must not be carried away with the success they have achieved so far; but they should try and build on it to sustain the goals for which it was established.”

Speaking in the same vein, Ike, also a first-time participant, said that the huge turnout of golfers he observed justified the credibility, quality, and essence of the tournament, especially within the age bracket it was designed for.

“This tournament deserves every support it needs to grow bigger and bigger because the organisers have done well in creating what can help retirees like me remain busy and active always.

But the caveat is that the organisers must not be carried away with the success of the moment and go to sleep, thinking that they have achieved their goals… they should continue to improve on what they have achieved.”

He also urged the organisers to extend the tournament to other golf clubs of the country to give it a national status.

Golfsixes major partners present at the event were Elder Olowo, Alhaji Awa Ibraheem, Zed Jituboh and Lola Akande, the only female partner, who presented an all-ladies’ team in the 2023 edition.

The third edition in the series since 2021, Golfsixses currently rotates between Abuja and Lagos.
