Grigor Dimitrov has withdrawn from Montpellier and he won’t be making his second appearance on the indoor-hard courts of Montpellier next week.
Montpellier update:
OUT: Dimitrov — Entry List Updates (@EntryLists) January 30, 2023
In 2020, Dimitrov made his debut in Montpellier.
Back then, Dimitrov had a first-round bye before picking up a surprise defeat to Gregoire Barrere in the Montpellier round-of-16. This February, Dimitrov was scheduled to make his second appearance in Montpellier. But unfortunately for the Montpellier organizers, the former world No 3 won’t be competing at this year’s tournament.
Dimitrov last played at the Australian Open
Dimitrov kicked off his 2023 season at the United Cup, where he represented Bulgaria. After going 1-1 in his two United Cup matches, Dimitrov also played an exhibition match at the Kooyong Classic just before the start of the Australian Open.
In Melbourne, Dimitrov made a very positive start to the Australian Open as he claimed back-to-back straight-set wins over Aslan Karatsev and Laslo Djere. After two straight-set wins, Dimitrov had to play Novak Djokovic in the third round.
Unfortunately for Dimitrov, he failed to deliver a big performance against Djokovic as the Serb claimed a 7-6 (7) 6-3 6-4 win. In the very first game of the match, Djokovic managed to break Dimitrov. After the match, Djokovic said that was one of the keys in his win over Dimitrov.
“I think the turning point, so to speak for both players, was right from the blocks, the very first game. An early break was important for me. I didn’t know how I was going to feel physically. I was kind of going up and down.
Up to the very last shot I didn’t know whether I was going to prevail. It was an incredible battle, three sets, over three hours. Let’s rest up and prepare for the next one,” Djokovic said after beating Dimitrov. Dimitrov’s next scheduled tournament is Rotterdam, which kicks on February 13th.
