If the Cowboys are going to make a run vs. the 49ers on Sunday, they’ll have to do it without one of their key running backs.
Tony Pollard, who was enjoying a breakout season, was injured in the second quarter of Dallas’ divisional matchup vs. San Francisco. Pollard would crawl, and then lie, on the ground for several minutes before being assisted to the blue medical tent.
On a routine play, Pollard’s left leg was trapped underneath a 49ers defender and twisted at a gruesome angle.
(Note: The Sporting News will refrain from sharing video of the injury, but you can view it here.)
After visiting the tent, Pollard was carted off to the locker room with an air cast on his left leg.

Tony Pollard injury update
In the second quarter of the Cowboys-49ers divisional matchup, the Cowboys running back had his left ankle trapped underneath a 49ers defender. Pollard needed help getting to the blue medical tent, and he was later carted to the locker room.
Pollard headed to the locker room with a towel on his head and an apparent air cast on his left leg, not a great sign for his second-half availability.

Fox Sports’ Tom Rinaldi reported during the game broadcast that Pollard suffered a high-ankle sprain. The Cowboys later declared Pollard out for the remainder of the game.
Cowboys RB depth chart
With Pollard off the field, the Cowboys are expected to give the majority of the running back snaps to Ezekiel Elliott. Dallas also has third-stringer Malik Davis available in the backfield.
Before the injury, Pollard had six carries for 22 yards against the stout 49ers defense. He is set to become a free agent after the season.
