For Todd Boehly, the answer is simple: SPEND, SPEND, SPEND!
Chelsea have splurged a bucket load on talent since the American’s arrival last May, but injuries and misfortune have undermined the start to Graham Potter’s tenure as manager. The Blues are languishing in mid-table halfway through the 2022/23 season as a result, and they’ve got a lot of ground to make up during the second half of the campaign if they’re to somehow sneak into a top-four spot.
The club’s January business will undoubtedly aid Potter’s cause, but their current deficit is a large one.
Chelsea’s path to the 2023/24 Champions League is foggy. A dreadful run of form in the wake of Potter’s honeymoon period has left the Blues tenth in the Premier League and ten points adrift of Newcastle in fourth.
Their malaise isn’t expected to last for long, however, with January signings Benoit Badiashile, Joao Felix (once he returns from his three-game ban) and Mykhaylo Mudryk poised to make swift impacts at Stamford Bridge. Still, it’s hard to envisage Potter’s side securing a top-four spot this season.
Another route, albeit very unlikely, is by winning the Champions League. The Blues defied the odds to win the competition under Thomas Tuchel in 2021 and their status as massive underdogs could help their cause during the knockout stages.
A round of 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund will be a challenge, however, and many will fancy Potter’s side to fall at the first hurdle.
