Former world No 1 Lindsay Davenport is in awe of Novak Djokovic’s flexibility and agility as she believes the Serb is ready to do major things at the Australian Open. Djokovic, 35, is still one of the healthiest and fittest athletes in the game as the Serb hasn’t lost a step despite being well in his thirties.
Going into the Australian Open, former three-time Grand Slam champion Davenport believes Djokovic is the top favorite for the title. “He is obviously ready to go in January. There’s no doubt he knows what he has to do, he’s ready to play.
He’s obviously so comfortable moving on the hard courts. For maybe some of us that didn’t move so well, it’s so hard to watch him because he makes it look so easy, right? In and out of the corners, changing directions, keeping so centered, the balance.
He is really one of the first tennis players to come along that is flexible like a gymnast. He is quick like a sprinter. Keeps his balance and changes direction with ease. That kind of flowing ability, that kind of balance, gives him such a huge advantage against everybody else,” Davenport said on Tennis Channel.
Djokovic off to a strong start to 2023
Djokovic kicked off his 2023 season last week as he made it all the way at the Adelaide International after saving a championship point in the final against Sebastian Korda. In the Adelaide semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, Djokovic sustained a hamstring injury but was able to continue and win the match.
On Wednesday, Djokovic practiced at the Australian Open with Medvedev. After just 36 minutes, Djokovic left the practice court as he didn’t want to risk aggravating his hamstring injury. The hamstring injury isn’t viewed as something really serious at this point but Djokovic will certainly be cautious not to aggravate it.
After missing the 2022 Australian Open, Djokovic has arrived in Melbourne determined to win a record 10th Australian Open title this year.
