‘Serena Williams won’t enjoy it’, says top coach

Serena Williams has undoubtedly been an icon of women’s tennis throughout her impressive career, bringing much to the movement and to her own opponents with her enormous talent and achievements. The American champion recently retired from the sport, having reissued a series of records, including 23 Grand Slam titles out of a total of 73 on the WTA circuit (an all-time record in the Open Era, including men, since the Spaniard Rafael Nadal is currently 22).

After a year away from official tournaments, the American made her return to fans around the world at Wimbledon, thanks to a wild card granted by the organization. On that occasion, the 41-year-old gave it her all, but she was immediately stopped in the main draw after a great battle.

In Toronto she managed to win a match before being eliminated by Belinda Bencic, while in Cincinnati British Emma Raducanu, fitter and already winner of the 2021 Us Open, gave her nothing, beating her in two quick sets. It was in New York that she said goodbye to tennis, but before that she paid tribute to the public with some incredible performances.

She scored her first win in her debut against Kovinic and then advanced to the third round by defeating the number two in the draw, Anett Kontaveit, in three sets. She thus became the only athlete to have beaten a Top 10 player for four consecutive decades.

Aija Tomljanovic left her no choice at the end of a tough challenge and she bid her a tearful goodbye to all the fans. The American has completely changed her life after hanging up the racket in the last Grand Slam of the 2022 season.

Despite the fact that there is no shortage of rumors about her possible return, Serena Williams wanted to share on social networks how she is adapting: “Right now I am allowing myself to be tired, relax and be alone sometimes.”

Mouratoglou on Serena Williams

Asked by our colleagues from Eurosport about a possible return of Serena Williams to the circuit, her coach from 2012 to 2022, Patrick Mouratoglou tried to weigh the pros and cons. “Do I want to see her play? I want to see her play again.

Yes, yes, if she has fun on the pitch. For that, she has to feel strong. If she doesn’t feel strong, she won’t enjoy it. I want to see her play good tennis. If she can play good tennis, of course I want to see her play. Everyone wants to see her play!

“Launched the French coach before tempering, in particular because of the new concerns of the American concerning her investments in the field of venture capital. “I think to be exceptional in something, and God knows she was, you have to be a bit obsessive. You have to be 100% focused on the activity, otherwise, even for tennis geniuses, it’s complicated.”
