‘I’m grateful to them for being there’

Novak Djokovic will miss the Davis Cup qualifying round after not being designated for the tie between Serbia and Norway. Between February 3 and 5, Serbia will face Norway away. The date of the tie is very awkward, since it will take place a few days after the Australian Open.

For the tie between Serbia and Norway, the captain of the Serbian Davis Cup team, Viktor Troicki, has designated Miomir Kecmanovic, Filip Krajinovic, Laslo Djere, Hamad Medjedovic and Nikola Cacic. Djokovic, who is bidding to win his 10th Australian Open title in January, decided not to participate in the Davis Cup tie.

During the pre-season, the Serbian Davis Cup captain, Troicki, was asked about Djokovic’s availability for the tie between Serbia and Norway. At the time, Troicki could not confirm Djokovic’s involvement, but also noted that Serbia has other quality players.

“We expect Novak to play in Melbourne until the end and therefore it remains to be seen if he will be able to be with us in Norway. But we have a strong team and I hope the rest of the team is ready. We play away, they have the third (ranked player) in the world, the others are not really quality players.

That is the first impression. It could have been better, but we have a chance against them, although it all depends on the team we have,” Troicki told Sport Klub at the end of November. Meanwhile, Djokovic kicked off his 2023 season at the Adelaide International.

In his first tournament back in Australia, Djokovic enjoyed a very warm reception. Now, he hopes to receive the same treatment when he arrives in Melbourne for the Australian Open. At Melbourne Park, Djokovic is a record nine-time Australian Open champion.

Nole Djokovic won again

In his final against Sebastian Korda in Adelaide, Novak Djokovic did not spare his team. After the loss of the first set, he was more than annoyed, he blamed himself. Suddenly, he released his nerves against part of his box and in particular against his brother, Marko, by making several hand gestures as if to tell them to leave.

This blow of blood, Nole later regretted it as he explained during his speech on the court: “I really want to thank my team. Thank you for supporting me, thank you for tolerating me in good and bad times, like today. I know they didn’t have a great time with me who kept going to get them but I’m grateful to them for being there.”
