Changing of the guard on the bench of the Spanish team. The federation has announced the end of Sergi Bruguera’s experience, leaving his position to David Ferrer. The former world number three and former Davis Cup director has signed a three-year contract: he will lead the national team until 2025.

The former Spanish player won the competition three times, specifically in 2008, 2009 and 2011. After receiving the commission, the new captain made statements, collected by MARCA, about the relationship with the players and, in particular, about the numbers 1 and 2 in the world and in Spain.

“I am very happy to face something that I like and it has responsibilities. I will give everything to try to get the players to give their best. I have their support and that was essential to accept the position,” he said, quoted by the Spanish newspaper, about what They will be the next adventures of the Iberian team in the next season.

David Ferrer, at the press conference to present his new position, spoke about his former teammate and also Davis Cup winner, Rafael Nadal, who did not participate in the competition this year. About the Spanish number two he said, according to MARCA: “Hopefully Rafa can come, but he is in his hands; we know he has a very tight schedule.

I will work with all the players, you never know who will be available.” Another comment, however, on who the Davis Cup will strive to play and win it, namely Carlos Alcaraz. “Carlos is very enthusiastic about the Davis Cup,” said the former Spanish tennis player, who then praised the potential of his young player.

“He has leadership material. At 19, taking that pressure into account, he became Grand Slam champion and world number one: I’ve only seen Rafa, Djokovic and a few others do that.”

Ivan Lendl comments on Alcaraz

A true living tennis legend with his 94 career titles, Andy Murray’s current coach, Ivan Lendl, returned in Craig Shapiro’s latest podcast on the mad rise of Carlos Alcaraz.

And obviously, Lendl particularly appreciated the world number one. “Alcaraz is very good and he will continue to improve for a while. I do not know. I don’t look at things that way. I know that Carlos Alcaraz is very well coached.

He has a great team around him. These guys are very, very good at what they do, Spaniards. And Juan Carlos Ferrero is fantastic and they teach him well, they teach him the right things, they teach him all the protocols. He is an extremely polite young man.

It is awesome. The Spaniards are doing something very well. The French do it too. They retain their old pros and integrate them into the programs.”
