The OWGR announces the recognition of a new Tour for 2023 On Wednesday, the OWGR Board announced, via a press release, that from next January a Tour will become part of the system, receiving the points valid for the Ranking.

It is a circuit whose tournaments are played over 54 holes.

The Tour in question is the Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana (or Mexican Professional Golf Tour, called American style). As we have mentioned, the game formula of the stages of the circuit is that of 54 holes, with a cut after 36, and culminates with a Grand Final played, otherwise, without a cut.

The GiraTour, as it is also called, was born in 2017 under the patronage of the Federacion Mexicana de Golf and, initially, organized its activity in agreement with the PGA Tour Latinoamerica (the Central American branch of the PGA Tour).

It also has the Qualifying School, which guarantees access to the main Tour. In short, we are talking about a well-structured developmental tour. Who 16 months ago began the process of obtaining recognition for the purposes of the World Ranking.

Path crowned yesterday by the OWGR communiqué, and proudly claimed by Comisionado José Miguel Bejos. Clearly, it has been a less bumpy path than the one LIV Golf is following to obtain the coveted recognition.

We have followed all the steps that the Saudi League has taken, up to that of the alliance with the Mena Tour, already recognized for the purposes of the World Ranking. Move promptly “stopped” by the leaders of the OWGR.

But the 2023 season is upon us, and it is unthinkable that the question of recognition will remain open. LIV leaders are working on the necessary adjustments to overcome the limits that the OWGR Board has set. And, perhaps, the case of the GiraTour can be a useful example to follow.

The Official World Golf Rankings is a system for assessing the level of performance of professional golfers. It was introduced in 1986, supported by the four major tournaments and six professional tours that make up the International Federation of the PGA Tours, namely the PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, Japan Golf Tour and the Sunshine Tour.
