You all look ridiculous now, I’m putting tennis on the map again

Nick Kyrgios says he deserves more respect as he feels he is the one that is “putting tennis on the map again.” On Wednesday, Kyrgios withdrew from the United Cup due to an ankle injury. Kyrgios’ late withdrawal wasn’t received well, especially in Australia as the 27-year-old was expected to lead his nation at the inaugural United Cup.

Through his Twitter account, Kyrgios seemingly addressed the criticism that has been directed his way. Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, is set to be featured in the first episode of Netflix’s tennis documentary – Break Point.

“Haha so after all this, all the media, journalism saying how bad I am for the sport, disrespecting the game & just a pure villain, I am going to be the number 1 episode on Netflix – to grow our fan base, basically trying to put tennis on the map again.

And essentially putting more money in everyone’s pockets that’s involved with tennis, you all look really ridiculous now. Your apology should be as loud as your disrespect was,” Kyrgios wrote on Twitter.

Kyrgios pulled out of the United Cup to focus on being fit for Melbourne

Last week, Kyrgios participated at the inaugural World Tennis League in Dubai. During the Dubai tournament, Kyrgios sustained an ankle injury.

Kyrgios joined the Australian United Cup team in Sydney but then pulled out of the tournament less than 24 hours before the start. On Wednesday, Australian United Cup captain Sam Stosur said the team learned about Kyrgios’ withdrawal just 10 minutes before it was made public.

“We literally just found out 10 minutes ago,” Australian United Cup captain Stosur told media. According to reports, Kyrgios decided to skip the United Cup because he wants to be fully fit for the Australian Open.

Kyrgios’ big goal for the 2023 season is to win a Grand Slam so it shouldn’t be surprising that he is putting all of his focus on the Australian Open.
