The world of tennis had to say goodbye to two of the biggest superstars on the Men’s and Women’s Tour in 2022. They are Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Both have left an indelible mark and have entered the hearts of all fans thanks to their immense talent.
The Swiss champion, as his matches and the numerous surveys launched by the ATP have shown, is the tennis player most loved by fans, and has decided to retire in the Laver Cup, playing one last doubles match with his friend-rival Rafael Nadal.
The American legend, for his part, opted to end his career at the US Open, where he reached the third round by fighting to the last point and defeating number two seed Anett Kontaveit. Williams, however, has never ruled out the possibility of playing an official tournament again in the future.
Two farewells that did not leave the spectators indifferent and that could have a strong impact on the future of tennis. Paolo Bertolucci, in an exclusive interview with the newspaper L’Unione Sarda, focused precisely on the fate of tennis.
The former Italian tennis star said: “World tennis will greet in 2022 two phenomena like Roger Federer and Serena Williams, unique and unrepeatable. But you can continue. With new faces, new champions. Because it is a sport that is increasingly international and in constant evolution.
Federer’s retirement was up in the air, unfortunately, his identity card paid off, he did everything possible to postpone his retirement as long as possible, he suffered a lot until the end. Will it also be the turn of Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the coming years? Sooner or later it will have to happen, fans should take it into account by making a consideration above all else.”
Hubert Hurkacz on King Roger
Polish tennis sensation Hubert Hurkacz recently recalled his historic win over Roger Federer at Wimbledon 2021. “I have always loved watching Roger Federer play. He is such an incredible player and person.
If I could borrow something from his game, it would definitely be the way he was committed to his shots, to his plan and to his ideas. That was something really incredible,” Hurkacz said. Hubert Hurkacz went on to praise his compatriots Iga Swiatek: “Iga [Swiatek] is doing an incredible job [for Polish tennis] and Magda [Linette] as well.
I think there are a lot of tennis fans in Poland. But certain things still need to be done for tennis to become more accessible for everyone and that will be amazing,” Hurkacz said.
