Current ATP rankings system is not based on skill and form

Nick Kyrgios suggests the ATP’s ranking is not based on skill and form but rather on consistency and how much one player competes on the Tour. In the latest UTR Rating list, Kyrgios is second with a 16.06 rating. The UTR Rating is a specific system that intends to provide a very clear rating of players’ tennis skills.

When making the UTR Rating, the main data points are the percentage of games won and not just wins and losses. On the ATP Tour rankings list, Kyrgios is 22nd. Kyrgios, who ended as runner-up at this year’s Wimbledon, wasn’t awarded a single point for his run at The Championship after the ATP decided to remove ranking points from this year’s tournament.

“I’ve said it before. The current ranking system is based on consistency and how much you play. Not skill and form,” Kyrgios wrote on Twitter.

Kyrgios finally getting more recognition in Australia

This year, Kyrgios became a Grand Slam champion after he and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Australian Open men’s doubles title.

Then, Kyrgios made his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon – in which he lost to Novak Djokovic. After being one of the most criticized Australian athletes at the start of his career, Kyrgios received much more appreciation in Australia this year.

“Yeah, I know, but I don’t forget the first seven years of my career. They can’t just pick and choose. Look, I’ve always been one of the best players in the world. I’ve always held up my fair share of the bargain towards Australia.

I feel like this is the first year I’ve earned respect when it should have been given when I first came on tour. I’ve represented them, put them on the map, and having produced one of the most successful male years in the last decade for Australia, and am only just getting embraced (now), I don’t think that’s my fault,” Kyrgios said. In January, Kyrgios will be aiming to win his first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open.
