France vs Poland live: World Cup score, highlights as Giroud and Mbappe score for France

Reigning champions France begin their knockout-phase challenge at the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Poland at Al Thumama Stadium.

Les Bleus topped their group despite a much-changed side losing their final game against Tunisia, with earlier victories over Australia and Denmark enough to send them through.

Poland’s progress was a little more complicated: Robert Lewandowski helped them beat Saudi Arabia after a draw with Mexico, but a poor performance against Argentina saw them lose 2-0 on matchday three, and they only reached the last 16 on goal difference, as Mexico’s 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia was not enough to snatch second place in Group C.

The Sporting News is tracking live scoring updates and highlights for France vs Poland at the 2022 World Cup. Follow for complete results from the Round of 16 match in Qatar.

France vs Poland live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

93 mins: Arkadiusz Milik  tries an overhead kick in the six yard area – it’s blocked and would have been offside, but a nice effort anyway.

89 mins: GOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!! 3-0 ! Kylian Mbappe again!

This incredible player shifts the ball onto his right foot and shoots high across Wojciech Szczęsny, who gets a fingertip onto the ball but not enough to stop a fantastic goal.

88 mins: Thuram is zooming past Matty Cash, who trips him up to earn a yellow card – his second of the tournament.

84 mins: Kylian Mbappe now has the same number of World Cup tournament goals as Diego Maradona and Rivaldo in their entire careers. And he’s aged just 23.

82 mins: Robert Lewandowski, who has been ultra-quiet, reminds Antoine Griezmann that he exists with a thudding challenge.

79 mins: That was Mbappe’s eighth goal at a World Cup finals, and his fourth of the 2022 edition. The wind is out of Poland’s sails now, and France are coasting.

GOAAAALLLLLLL! 2-0 France! Kylian Mbappe!!!

France race out of defence, Olivier Giroud finds Mbappe who then powers the ball past the keeper’s right hand into the top of the net. Sublime stuff.

72 mins: France would appear to be much the better side today, but at 1-0 there is plenty of time for Poland, and there is bound to be a lot added on after 90 minutes.

67 mins: A rare attack from Poland sees Przemysław Frankowski cross towards Jakub Kaminski, but the Polish player is ushered away from it by Raphael Varane

65 mins: Jules Kounde sends in a low cross towards Olivier Giroud at the near post. The AC Milan man gets enough on it to send it into the side-netting but he’s convinced he should have done better from a  tight angle.

63 mins: Kylian Mbappe hits the deck in the area, there’s half a look to the referee but in fact Ousmane Dembele is called for offside.

59 mins: Both players were up and about after a stoppage, but Poland have yet to really threaten in this half.

55 mins: Kylian Mbappe fires in a shot after cutting ion from the left, but Kamil Glick gets enough of himself in the way to deflect the ball away for a corner. Wojciech Szczęsny and Matty Cash are in a heap afterwards, and the game stops for treatment.

52 mins: Adrien Rabiot glides down the left before sending in a low cross that Bartosz Bereszyński does well to cut out and clear.

47 mins: Yellow card: Bartosz Bereszyński clips Ousmane Deembele, while seemingly getting the ball as well. Antoine Griezmann pumps it in from the free kick and Wojciech Szczęsny punches it away with ease.

46 mins: We are back in action, no changes as yet.

France’s number #1

King Olivier

Giroud has gone past Thierry Henry with his 52nd goal for France.

Half-time: That was an absolute killer for Poland – they had done pretty well up until then, now they have it all to do.

GOAAAALLLLL! Olivier Giroud! France 1-0 Poland!

Kylian Mbappe threads the ball through the Polish defence, and Giroud makes a smart run with a lovely finish, twisting to stab the ball with his left beyond Szczesny’s left hand. Superb finish!

41 mins: The referee stops the game to get Jules Kounde to retie his gold chain, which was flapping loose. He just takes it off and gives to one of the team on the bench.

38 mins: WHAT A SAVE! Piotr Zieliński hits a shot from near the penalty spot that Hugo Lloris just gets a leg to to deflect it away! France rattled.

34 mins: Kylian Mbappe twists and turns away from Matty Cash before slamming in a shot from an angle that Wojciech Szczęsny has to push away for a corner.

33 mins:  They come straight back and Bartosz Bereszyński sees a chipped cross blocked away. Then Matty Cash zooms in on the other flank and rifles a shot/cross across the box.

32 mins: Poland win a free kick 25 metres out, and after a lot of delay Robert Lewandowski finally takes it. Sadly, it is a truly dreadful effort, low and straight into the wall.

29 mins: WHAT A MISS! Ousmane Dembele slides the ball low across the face of goal from the right, but Olivier Giroud cannot guide it on target from inside the six yard box!

24 mins: Poland are getting into this game, with Przemysław Frankowski seeing a shot from an angle blocked. They have begun to come out of their shells a bit in the last few minutes.

21 mins: Wojciech Szczęsny is called upon again when Jules Kounde slams a shot into the Polish keeper’s midriff.

20 mins: Robert Lewandowski gets a rare sight of goal, winning the ball 25 metres out and then letting fly with his left foot. The shot is always curling away wide, but that is promising from the prolific start striker.

15 mins: Wojciech Szczęsny is a busy bee – this time he has to drop to stop a shot from Ousmane Dembele that went straight at him.

14 mins: Olivier Giroud races through to try to get to a pass from Antoine Griezmann, but Wojciech Szczęsny slides onto it on the edge of the box.

12 mins: Aurelien Tchouameni takes aim from 25 metres out, and Wojciech Szczęsny copes well with a shot that bounces just in front of him. France’s fourth corner fails to worry the Polish keeper, but this is ominous for the Poles.

10 mins: Mbappe skins Cash again and this time Bartosz Bereszyński has to concede a corner.

9 mins: Kylian Mbappe glides past Matty Cash and crosses – Jakub Kiwior has to be certain with his diving header behind, and from the corner Poland clear up field.

5 mins: Matty Cash exchanges a nice one-two on the right and chips in a cross that Hugo Lloris has to deal with backpedalling along his six yard line.

3 mins: Ousmane Dembele wins France’s first corner, which Antoine Griezmann whips into the box. Raphael Varane leaps to it and powers his header high and wide. All France so far.

2 mins: Bartosz Bereszyński clatters Antoine Griezmann to give away an early free kick. Griezmann takes it, but his curling effort is overhit and goes out for a goal kick.

Kickoff: We are under way! France are in their natty deep blue shirts, Poland in the traditional white shirt/red shorts combo.

2 mins to kickoff: Handshakes exchanged, coin tossed, we are all set!

5 mins to kickoff: It’s the national anthems now with France going first.

10 mins to kickoff: The teams are inside having completed the warm-ups, the giant flags are out on the pitch so there’s not long to go now.

20 mins to kickoff: It’s a great day for Hugo Lloris as well.

25 mins to kickoff: Ominously for Poland, every time France have reached the last 16 since it was introduced in 1986, they have made the quarter-finals. Poland last got this far in 1986, when Brazil walloped them 4-0.

35 mins to kickoff: Which one of these two will come out on top today?

45 mins to kickoff: That’s France back to full strength, but that Poland lineup looks decent.

1 hr to kickoff: France make nine changes, with only Varane and Tchouameni surviving. Poland bring in Glik, Szymanski and Kaminski.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Didier Deschamps has been here before, of course. A Word Cup winner as a player in 1998 and as a coach 20 years later, he knows better than most how to navigate the knockout rounds.

5 hrs from kickoff: Welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of this Round of 16 clash between France and Poland. There might have been a blip against Tunisia, but the French have looked good in Qatar. In fact, at times, they’ve looked very good. Can Poland summon an improved performance today and knock the champions out in the Round of 16? We’ll find out soon enough!

France vs Poland lineups, team news

France were ravaged by injuries in the build-up to the tournament, so it was no surprise to see head coach Didier Deschamps make nine changes to his starting lineup against Tunisia in a bid to avoid any further casualties.

Expect Deschamps to deploy a full-strength side again for the knockout campaign, with the likes of captain Hugo Lloris and strikers Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann restored.

Theo Hernandez is likely to play at left-back, as he did against Denmark after his brother, Lucas, ruptured the ACL in his right knee versus Australia.

France projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Lloris (GK) — 2. Pavard, 4. Varane, 18. Upamecano, 22. T. Hernandez — 7. Griezmann, 8. Tchouameni, 14. Rabiot — 11. Dembele, 9. Giroud, 10. Mbappe

Poland head coach Czeslaw Michniewicz could field a more conservative lineup after seeing his counter-attacking side comfortably beaten by Argentina.

Feyenoord’s Sebastian Szymasnki and Wolfsburg’s Jakub Kaminski, who might have been reinforcement options at the back, both started that game on the bench.

Poland projected lineup (4-4-2, right to left): 1. Szczesny (GK) — 2. Cash, 15. Glik, 14. Kiwior, 18. Bereszynski — 20. Zielinski, 6. Bielik, 10. Krychowiak, 24. Frankowski — 16. Swiderski, 9. Lewandowski
