Murray, who in the past was the captain of the British Billie Jean King Cup team, will work with aspiring coaches and provide taster sessions for girls and women during her time in Riyadh.
The inaugural Diriyah Tennis Cup was held in 2019, but the tournament didn’t take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Now, the tournament is returning for its second edition as Saudi Arabia is aiming to increase the popularity of tennis in the country and have pro tennis players in the future.
Murray, who has a very deep tennis knowledge and lots of coaching experience, can certainly provide expert insight and give some direction to Saudi tennis.
Murray to have a role at the Diriyah Tennis Cup
“Throughout my involvement in tennis, I have championed the cause of giving as many people as possible the opportunity to try tennis and to fall in love with it the way I have, and the way Jamie and Andy have.
I am particularly keen to ensure girls and women are given an equal opportunity to enjoy and experience tennis, whether for fun, for fitness or for friendship. Tennis enables all of that and while it is a global sport that has produced some of the greatest sportspeople of our time, it is also, at the same time, a community where everyone can connect.
That is the message I have relayed throughout my time as a coach and as a champion for workforce development: we need to remove barriers to participation but also to ensure we can sustain growth in participation and ensure that the community can unite to showcase how special tennis can be, regardless of age, gender or ability.
I look forward to bringing that message and the practical skills and knowledge to the tennis community in Saudi Arabia in the effort to introduce more girls and women to tennis,” Judy Murray said in a statement posted on the tournament’s website.
The Diriyah Tennis Cup is set to feature some of the biggest names for the game. Between 08-10 December, the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev will be competing.
There will also be some other great names as the Diriyah Tennis Cup organizers are hoping for a great tournament edition.
