Eugenie Bouchard celebrates Roger Federer
In a press conference during the Guadalajara tournament, Eugenie Bouchard wanted to pay tribute to Roger Federer.
She said: “I have always adored Roger Federer. His class and elegance were truly unique. There will never be anyone like him. If there are boys or girls who are inspired by me, it is a real honor. I remember as a child I watched my idols on TV and wanted their autographs.
Being that person for someone else is an honour. I really appreciate the support of the people. I hope I can inspire people both on and off the court.” In a recent interview with SportCenter, David Nalbandian commented on the Maestro’s retirement: “The announcement of his farewell didn’t surprise me at all.
He’s had a lot of problems in recent years and his knee couldn’t take it anymore. It’s never nice when an athlete is forced to retire due to injuries. We all wished Roger would play forever, but his retirement was inevitable.”
After 24 years of career, Roger Federer decided to hang up his racket last month. The Swiss champion realized that he could no longer compete at the highest levels, thanks to a right knee that could no longer bear certain efforts.
Roger had tried a timid comeback in 2021, picking up nine wins and four losses. The former world number 1 had stopped again after Wimbledon (2021), in the hope that yet another operation would allow him to treat himself to one last ride on the carousel.
The 41-year-old from Basel had promised that he would play some tournaments in 2023, but the MRI he underwent last July confirmed that there was no more progress. Through a letter published on Instagram, the Maestro communicated his decision to quit.
His last performance at the Laver Cup was truly heartbreaking, with his great friend and rival Nadal unable to hold back his tears.
