Wimbledon is set to relax its dress code for female players, according to The Daily Mail. Last week, Judy Murray urged Wimbledon to rethink their strict all-white underwear policy as she said that a female player going through a menstrual cycle can suffer “a traumatic experience” if she noticed a trace of blood on her white clothes, in front of the crowd and TV cameras.
According to The Daily Mail, Wimbledon will likely make small changes to its dress code rules and allow female players to wear colored underwear. However, the main rule stays the same as players will still have to wear all-white clothes on top.
Wimbledon set to take action after Murray’s comments
Murray, a former British Billie Jean King Cup team captain, called for Wimbledon to relax its strict all-white policy. “One of the biggest problems previously in sport was that it was always white shorts, white kit and so on in lots of different sports.
Everything was white. Nearly all sports have moved over to colour now. I think it’s certainly a much more open talking point, if you are wearing all white and then possibly have a leak while you’re playing. I cannot think of a much more traumatic experience than that.
When all matches are televised and streamed now, it is something that needs to be considered. It’s one of those things, when something like that becomes a talking point, decisions have to be made on it. However it’s really important, too, that we have lots of women on the decision-making panel, because they understand what that’s like to have menstrual cycles and they understand the fear of that happening while playing,” Murray told The Daily Mail last week.
Shortly after Murray’s comments, the AELTC board took action and started discussions. But even before Murray’s comments, many were calling for Wimbledon to relax its strict underwear all-white underwear policy.
