Gael Monfils has announced his withdrawal from the Paris Masters as his 2022 season is over and he is switching his focus toward preparing as best as he can for the 2023 season. Monfils, 36, hasn’t played since sustaining a foot injury at the Montreal Masters, in August.
Since Monfils wants to give himself more time before he returns to action, he won’t be making his 11th Paris Masters appearance next week. At the Paris Masters, Monfils is a two-time finalist, having ended runner-up at the tournament in 2009 and 2010.
“Hi friends, as you have seen this week on stream, I am still limited in my trips on the court. I will therefore not be able to defend my chances at @RolexPMasters. I will take advantage of the end of the year to prepare for the next season,” Monfils tweeted.
Monfils played just one tournament in the second part of the season
After skipping the start of the clay season, Monfils played his first clay tournament of the year at the Madrid Masters.
Following his Madrid exit, Monfils underwent a heel surgery as he missed the French Open and the entire grass season. After being out for three months, Monfils returned to action at the Montreal Masters. In his first tournament back following a lengthy absence, Monfils sustained a foot injury during his round-of-16 match against Jack Draper.
Monfils was forced to retire the match and to return to Europe. “Dear all, following the latest medical exams that I took upon returning in Europe, I will sadly not be able to play at the US Open this year. I am forced to undergo a new period of treatment before being able to resume tournaments.
I will keep you informed as soon as I can with regards to my next tournament,” Monfils wrote on Twitter the day after sustaining an injury in Montreal. While recovering from the injury, Monfils has become a father as he and Elina Svitolina welcomed their first child in mid-October.
