The American Dustin Johnson delivered this Friday a card of 63 shots, nine under par, to take command of the LIV Invitational in Chicago with three shots ahead of the Australian Cameron Smith.

At Rich Harvest Farms, about 80 kilometers from Chicago, Dustin Johnson sealed nine ‘birdies’, without ‘bogeys’ to take advantage in the first of the three days of competition planned by LIV, the new golf league financed by the Saudi Arabian government that, based on millionaire prizes, is rivaling the PGA Tour.
British Open champion Cameron Smith made no mistakes either and his six birdies allowed him to contain Johnson’s big day. Matthew Wolff was placed in third position, with 65 hits, who made up for a bogey with four birdies and an eagle.
Brooks Koepka, double champion of the US Open and the PGA Championship, finished the first round in 70 shots, two under par, as did Phil Mickelson, who paid a triple bogey on the fifth hole. The Mexican Carlos Ortiz was the best Hispanic player with two under par, with the Chilean Joaquín Niemann who delivered a card of 71 strokes (one under par), while the also Mexican Abraham Ancer finished with one over par.
Eugenio López Chacarra was the best Spaniard with one under par, while Sergio García signed the pair. Also Spanish David Puig finished the first round with one over par. The Chicago tournament runs until next Sunday.
