Serena Williams was grateful to everyone who came out to show support during her US Open first round match. On Monday night in New York, Williams started her final US Open campaign with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Danka Kovinic on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The match featured a sold out crowd as the attendance of 29,402 set the new record for the highest-attendance number in tournament history. “I didn’t expect any of this [packed crowd and reception]. The crowd was crazy.

It really helped pull me through. You know, I always just got to do the best that I can. I feel so comfortable on this court and in front of everyone here. When I step out on the court I just want to do my best, what I can do on that particular day and that’s really all I can do,” Williams said, via Sportskeeda.

Williams on being an inspiration and a great role model

Following her US Open first round victory, Williams recalled her roots and how she was able to make it out of Compton and become one of the greatest athletes in all sports history.

Williams’ story is one of the most inspiring in all sports and she is hoping her story helps others believe they can overcome all the adversity and be successful. “[When people hear my name] I just want people to think how hard one tries.

But yeah, it’s so important to give your all no matter what you do, no matter how many obstacles you face. Like, I’ve been down and out so many times in the public eye. I’ve had to come back and, you know, you just never give up.

It sounds cliched but that really means something. No matter what you’re going through out there and I just want people to be inspired by my story. I’m from Compton, California you know and I made it,” Williams added. Williams plays Anett Kontaveit in the US Open second round.
