Danielle Collins reveals she has always been a fan of Serena and Venus Williams as she is hoping she doesn’t meet Serena somehow in her final tournament. Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, is retiring after this year’s US Open.

On the other side, Venus hasn’t made any official announcements but the belief is that Venus will also announce her retirement once the US Open is finished. “I think as everybody knows, I’ve idolized Serena and Venus my whole life, they’ve been people I’ve really looked up to,” Collins said.

With Serena playing the final tournament of her career, she has been getting lots of appreciation over the last few days. “This is such a big moment in our tennis history,” Collins said. “I love how our sport celebrates our champions of the game.

Hopefully, yeah, I don’t have to play Serena at some point because I’ll be so torn.”

Collins on finally beating Naomi Osaka

Meanwhile, Collins got off to a good start to the US Open as she defeated Osaka 7-6 (5) 6-3.

For the first time in her career, 28-year-old Collins defeated Osaka. Previously, Osaka beat Collins three times. “I lost to Naomi three times before, so going into the match I had a lot of information on what I kind of needed to do better, areas I could improve,” Collins said, adding, “I think I did those things and played overall pretty well.

I got lucky in some big moments. But I was working really hard for the points. She wasn’t giving me a ton much free ones.” Collins is playing just her first hard court tournament this summer. Collins has been plagued by injuries throughout the season and that’s why she hasn’t really played much in recent months. But Collins has gotten off to a good start in New York. In the US Open second round, Collins plays Cristina Bucsa.
