American tennis legend Pam Shriver thinks Danka Kovinic is a favorable US Open first round matchup for Serena Williams. On Thursday, 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams learned that 80th-ranked Kovinic will be her first round opponnt at Flushing Meadows.

Kovinic has been playing poorly over the last few months as she hasn’t had a win since the French Open. Kovinic has lost her last five matches. “Serena Williams first round opponent Kovinic has won 4 games in her last 4 sets played.

Kovinic much better on clay, where at Roland Garros pushed Iga in 3rd round loss. Serena has won more matches since Wimbledon than Kovinic. This is as good a first round as Serena could get,” Shriver tweeted.

Williams set for the final tournament of her career

Two weeks ago, Williams revealed her plans to retire after this year’s US Open.

Williams announced her retirement in a piece published for Vogue. This week, Williams explained how it really felt writing retirement message. “Yeah. It wasn’t very easy. Like, I remember I was in, randomly, I was in Switzerland and I was just sitting in the hotel at the desk, just typing and deleting and typing and thinking and then crying and sitting at my computer and tears streaming down my face as I’m writing these words and going back on these memories,” Williams said on the Archetypes podcast, per Sportskeeda.”

And it was just like, God, it was, it was really hard. Um. I mean, but I was like, if I’m going to do this, it has to be Vogue September issue, right?” Williams enjoyed a very long and successful career. Since becoming pro in 1995, Williams has won 23 Grand Slams and left a major mark in tennis history.

At the US Open, Williams is a six-time champion. The US Open is the Grand Slam where Williams won her first Grand Slam title.
