Serbian Davis Cup team captain Viktor Troicki says Novak Djokovic is always ready to help out and revealed that the 21-time Grand Slam champion was there for him when he needed help. Troicki, 36, retired from professional tennis last year.
Now, Troicki serves as Serbia’s Davis Cup team captain. Also, Troicki is helping out at the Novak Tennis Centre in Belgrade. “I have known Novak for a very, very long time,” Troicki told We Love Tennis France.
“He is a friend. I went through a difficult period in my career and he was there for me. It’s his great quality, Novak likes to help people who have problems, he looks for solutions, he takes pleasure in it. I know that for me it was decisive.
This is also why I am here in his center. We have the same goals, to allow our hopefuls to train in their country, which we have not always been able to do in our time.”
Troicki and Djokovic won the ATP Cup together
At the start of the 2020 season, the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup was held.
In the final, Serbia clashed Spain. After two singles rubbers, Serbia and Spain were tied to one win apiece. In the third decisive rubber, Troicki and Djokovic clashed Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez. Troicki and Djokovic delivered for their country, beating Carreno Busta and Lopez 6-3 6-4.
After the match, Troicki said he would never forget that moment. “I want to thank Novak for playing with me again. It was a great experience like always. I remember playing with him since we were nine, 10. To share such a moment on the court with him, I cannot describe it with words.
As you said, I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” Troicki said. Troicki and Djokovic were part of the Serbian team that won the country’s first and lone Davis Cup title in 2010.
