Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian took their daughter Olympia to a Waffle House restaurant to show her the place that made him start Reddit instead of becoming a lawyer. Alexis Ohanian described the experience on his Instagram account.
“’Papa stop taking photos and let me eat this waffle’ — I took Olympia Ohanian to her first Waffle House. If you know my story, you know that if I hadn’t walked out of the LSAT to get WH, I’d be a lawyer instead of starting Reddit.
I’ll always be grateful to that WH on 29 near University of Virginia” Ohanian captioned the post.
How did Waffle House make Serena’s husband start Reddit
In a past Fast Company interview, Serena Williams’ husband was asked what was his career fork in the road. “I walked out of an LSAT and into a Waffle House, realizing I didn’t want to be a lawyer.
That’s when I decided to be an entrepreneur. I persuaded my [University of Virginia] roommate to turn down his job offer and work with me to build Reddit,” said Alexis Ohanian, as quoted by Fast Company. In 2020, Alexis Ohanian stepped down from the board of Reddit, asking that he be replaced with a more diverse candidate.
Serena Williams tweeted that she was proud of her husband’s decision. “Having diverse views on any boards is important. So proud of you Alexis. I know Olympia will be too.” Alexis Ohanian tweeted about his reaction.
“I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?'” Ohanian has also pledged $1 million to Colin Kaepernick’s nonprofit Know Your Rights Camp.
“I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate,” said Alexis Ohanian in another tweet.
