Former world No. 93 Andrej Martin has been provisionally suspended for breaching the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. In early June, Martin provided a sample at the Bratislava Challenger. The sample Martin provided returned positive for a non-specified prohibited substance.
“The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has confirmed that 32-year-old Slovakian tennis player Andrej Martin has been provisionally suspended under Article 7.12.1 of the 2022 Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP).
The ITIA sent the player a pre-charge notice of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation on 22 July 2022 under Article 2.1 of the Programme (presence of a Prohibited Substance in a Player’s Sample) and Article 2.2 (Use of a Prohibited Substance without a valid TUE), confirming they were provisionally suspended from that date,” the ITIA’s statement read.
“Martin, who had an ATP Singles ranking of 191 at the time of the test, was tested at an ATP Challenger event in Bratislava in June 2022. The analysis of the sample found that the A sample contained SARM S-22, which is a non-specified prohibited substance listed in the 2022 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.
Adverse Analytical Findings for non-specified substances carry a mandatory provisional suspension.”
Martin, 32, spent the majority of his season on the Challenger Tour
Prior to the suspension, Martin spent the majority of his season on the Challenger Tour.
Martin, who achieved his career-high ranking of No. 93 in the world just two years ago, appeared in just one ATP tournament this season. In his lone ATP appearance in 2022 – which came in February at the Cordoba Open – Martin suffered a first round defeat.
Martin’s best result of the season came at the Heilbronn Challenger in May, when he reached the final before losing to Daniel Altmaier. Martin last played at the Trieste Challenger three weeks ago, where he was beaten in the first round. It remains to be seen when will Martin be allowed to return to action.
