Venus Williams says she is excited about competing at the Citi Open as the Washington community has always been very supportive of her throughout her career. Williams, 42, accepted a main draw wildcard into the Citi Open and she will make her Washington debut next week.
Williams, who competed in this year’s Wimbledon mixed doubles event, hasn’t played in a singles tournament since last year’s August. “I am excited to be playing the Citi Open for the first time this summer,” Williams said.
“I love Washington, DC, and returning to the nation’s capital to play in front of a community that has supported me so strongly feels like a homecoming. I am looking forward to being back on the courts and competing in DC soon”.

Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam champion and a former world No. 1. Williams is an American tennis icon and the Citi Open organizers are thrilled to have a chance to host her.

The opportunity to watch her live at the Citi Open for the first time will be a life-long memory for all of our fans”. Williams didn’t expect to compete at Wimbledon but everything changed when she stepped onto the grounds of The All England Club.
Williams asked Jamie Murray if he was willing to play mixed doubles, and when the Briton accepted, they asked Wimbledon for a wildcard – Wimbledon granted them one. After reaching the Wimbledon mixed doubles last-16, Williams is now set to make her singles return.
