By Craig Daly: Danny Garcia says former lightweight contender Ryan Garcia looks like a welterweight now, and he’s anxious to see him fight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis if that match-up can happen later this year.
Danny says he watched last Saturday’s fight between the unbeaten Kingry Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) and former WBA super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna (37-4-1, 26 KOs), and he says the size difference between them was a 140-pounder fighting a 126-pounder.
According to Danny ‘Swift,’ Fortuna was too small to have any chance of beating the welterweight-size 23-year-old Ryan.
With his size advantage, it’s not surprising that Ryan wants the small lightweight Gervonta Davis to come up to 140 to fight him because he can use his size against the 5’5″ fighter. Tank Davis started his career at 130, which is a division he should be fighting at because it matches his frame.
When Tank moved up to 140 to pick up his third division world title last year against WBA light welterweight champion Mario Barrios, he had a lot of problems in that fight and needed a pep talk from his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr after the seventh round for him to rally.
“He looked great; he made it look easy,” said Danny Garcia to Fight Hub TV when asked about what he thought of Ryan Garcia’s victory over Javier Fortuna last weekend.
“He looked strong, and he looked fresh,” Danny continued about the 23-year-old unbeaten Ryan Garcia. “I thought Fortuna would be better, but once I saw the size difference, it looked like a 140-pounder vs. a 126-pounder.
“I knew it wouldn’t go the distance. I think the sky’s the limit for him,” Danny said when asked how far he thinks Ryan Garcia can go in his career. “Like I said before in other interviews, I think he’s great for boxing.
“He’s a great personality, he’s controversial, which is great, and he can fight. So, I think the sky’s the limit for him. That’s a great fight [Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia]. Gervonta has got explosive power, speed & power. He’s hungry; he’s a mean kid, and he loves to fight.
“Ryan is the same way. Ryan looks like he has something to prove, and when you’re calling somebody out, you think you can beat them. You’re not going to call somebody out if you don’t think you can beat them just for fun.
“You can’t bite off more than you can chew, or you really believe in yourself. That’s why I like the [Davis vs. Ryan] fight so much. That’s one thing I noticed when I was in New York about how big he was. He looks like a welterweight. He’s a big kid,” said Danny about Ryan Garcia having the size of a 147-pound fighter.
