Tiger Woods’ long-awaited opportunity to play the Old Course at St. Andrews — host of the 2022 Open Championship — is finally here.
Normally, he would have had to wait five years for the Open Championship to return to his favorite course in golf. In 2020, when the Open Championship was supposed to return to St. Andrews, the tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just two years later, he will make the most of what could be his last real chance to add a fourth Claret Jug to his collection.
Woods’ future exploits in golf won’t resemble what made him the sport’s biggest star. That’s his and fans’ new reality following his recovery from a February 2021 car crash. Indeed, he skipped the 2022 U.S Open to ensure he would be physically capable of playing The Open.
Whether Tiger will be able to play at his current level at St. Andrews is anything but given.

1:01 p.m: What an approach by Tiger, whose approach stops a foot short of an eagle. That’s another great look at birdie.
12:55 p.m.: Tiger’s on the fairway and seems to like his shot. Onward.
12:47 p.m.: Well, he certainly didn’t make it easy for himself, but Tiger has his first birdie of the round on Hole 9 (and walks away with a knowing smile). He finishes the front side of the course with a 5-over 41.
12:44 p.m.: Tiger leaves himself about 6 or 7 feet for birdie. No risk of bogey here, but missing here would be devastating for his chances to make the cut.
12:36 p.m.: Great drive by Tiger, whose ball lands on the green and rolls into the second cut. He’s looking at an up-and-down for birdie, his best shot at birdie so far, it would seem.
12:31 p.m.: Par it is. Tiger is 6 over through eight holes.
12:28 p.m.: Tiger’s ball ended up landing in the second cut; he gets a nice chip out of the taller stuff onto the green. Looks like he’ll have a foot or two for par.
12:22 p.m.: Tiger doesn’t seem to like his drive on the par-3 eighth. Wherever his ball landed, the camera couldn’t find it.
12:16 p.m.: No such luck. He misses it left and that’s a two-putt double-bogey. With that, Tiger is 6 over through seven holes.
12:15 p.m.: Tiger’s in decent position to bogey from 8 feet out. That might be a victory at this point.
12:09 p.m.: Bad to worse for Tiger. His approach on Hole 7 isn’t on the green, and he has to wedge from the fairway to salvage par. He’s in danger of losing another stroke.
12:03 p.m.: He pulls it left on the seventh hole; the telecast says he hit the bunker on the 12th hole, which is, in a word, not ideal.
12:03 p.m.: Tiger backs off the tee on Hole 7. Maybe waiting for the wind to die down?
12:02 p.m.: Tiger does indeed get the up-and-down par to remain 4 over through six holes.
11:54 a.m.: Tiger hates his approach (again), as he made apparent with a look of disappointment. He misses the green and looks to be 40 yards away from the pin, in the trench.
11:48 a.m.: A fantastic drive by Tiger down the left-hand side of the fairway. Let’s see how he manages his approach, which has cost him quite a bit so far today.
11:40 a.m.: Tiger centers it to salvage par. He remains 4 over through five holes.
11:40 a.m.: His putt stops about 3 foot left of the pin. He’s in position to salvage par, but this is, at best, a lost opportunity for Tiger.
11:37 a.m.: Tiger gets out of the trench but skies it 20 feet past the hole. He’ll have that lag putt for birdie.
11:30 a.m.: Tiger’s approach lands in the trench just in front of the green. Still in play for an up-and-down birdie but he’d have liked to hit the green there.
11:21 a.m.: Tiger stays left again on the fairway, but still has a chance to get one back on the par-5 fifth. This is a gotta-have-it hole.
11:10 a.m.: That’s a three-put bogey on Hole 4. Tiger is 4 over through four.
11:08 a.m.: USA Network again cuts to Tiger on the green, skipping his approach. He looks to make a lag-putt birdie but falls a 6, 7 short. Going to need to start getting a few of those back.
10:55 a.m.: Tiger went all-in on that drive; he hits the rough stuff in the center of the course but it hops out back onto the green. There’s a bit of a down slope but otherwise not bad.
10:46 a.m.: The telecast moves away from Tiger for a bit and cuts back to him attempting a 12-foot par attempt. He misses right and drops another shot to go 3 over through three holes.
10:36 a.m.: Another drive by Tiger goes left but stays on the fairway. Lots of rolling hills and depressions on the course help keep it in play.
10:27 a.m.: Hell of a putt by Tiger, who nearly holes it from long range. It just passes left, and he’ll have a tap-in putt for par. Great rebound after a disastrous first hole.
10:24 a.m.: Tiger flies his approach on Hole 2, but it rolls back onto the green. He’s looking at a 30-footer for birdie.
10:18 a.m.: Tiger’s drive goes left and stays left. He’s on the fairway and has avoided the bunker. Onward.
10:15 a.m.: Tiger somehow misses the 2-footer and now has a double-bogey after one hole. Not ideal, but he’s got 35 holes left to play to make the weekend cut. He’s 2 over after Hole 1.
10:12 a.m.: Tiger takes a penalty and looks to chip over the water again for par. He just misses and will settle for a Hole 1 bogey.
10:08 a.m.: Tiger’s shot is no good. He kicks up some sand out of the divot on his approach shot and then hits the front-side water hazard — reportedly the first golfer to do so in Round 1.
10 a.m.: Tiger goes with the iron down the left-center side. We’re off!
