Defending champion Tamara Zidansek crashed out in the first round of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Monday. Anna Kalinskaya ousted the seventh-seeded Slovenian, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes. Kalinskaya won 75% of her first-serve points to Zidansek’s 70%.

Both players lost their serve thrice across the match but the cleanest set for the 2021 titlist was the second set in which she faced no break points. The deciding set had both players trade breaks before the eventual winner secured a second break to clinch the win.

In the second round, Kalinskaya will play either Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic or Japan’s Misaki Doi.

Meanwhile, the other seed who played her opening-round match on Monday, Spanish fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo reached the round-of-16.

Sorribes Tormo beat American Lauren Davis 6-2, 7-6(1) in an hour and 57 minutes. Next up for Sorribes Tormo is the 2021 Lausanne finalist, Clara Burel. The Frenchwoman routed China’s Lin Zhu, 6-0, 6-1 in just 46 minutes in their round-of-32 clash.

Burel won 93% of her first-serve points and 70% of her second-serve points. She also didn’t face any break points and converted five of the seven break points that came her way on Zhu’s serve. Burel’s compatriot, Oceane Dodin, however, didn’t fare that well in her first-round match.

Swiss wildcard, Susan Bandecchi beat Dodin 6-2, 6-1 in 67 minutes. Bandecchi won four break points on Dodin’s serve and saved both break points she faced. In the second round, Bandecchi will either play another French player in Diane Parry or second seed and fellow Swiss, Belinda Bencic.

Another Swiss player, Ylena In-Albon crashed out in the first round. Germany’s Jule Niemeier, who recently reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals won their clash, 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3. Niemeier could play fellow German, qualifier Eva Lys or eighth seed, Varvara Gracheva next.

Lastly, Anastasia Potapova also reached the second round of the Ladies Open Lausanne with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Lucia Bronzetti. Potapova awaits either third seed, Irina-Camelia Begu or Tamara Korpatsch next.
