In Rome, at the Campidoglio, they gave the numbers of the Ryder Cup 2023. From the second meeting of Italy Best Golf it emerged that the tourist turnover of the competition that will open in 450 days would be around one billion euros.

The event would also make the Italian taxman happy.

Ryder Cup, statements

“What we are preparing to host is a stratospheric event, which will bring benefits to Italy – explained Franco Chimenti, president of Federgolf.

“Twelve players from the Old Continent will find themselves on the pitch, side by side, under the same flag. Get together. An example for politics and for the whole world, in such a difficult historical moment. The Ryder Cup will leave a lot from a sporting and tourism point of view, with the hotels in the capital already full in view of a global event “

The numbers that emerged from the conference are many. From the Ryder Cup 2023 (made possible thanks to public intervention) all Italian citizens will benefit. In fact, according to the Federation, the event that will begin on 29 September 2023 will bring 157 million euros to the state coffers – only in tax revenues.

Not really peanuts. From a media point of view, the forecast for television rights and sponsorships is 56 million euros. Of course, these are estimates and forecasts. The reliable data are those that come from the latest edition of Ryder on European soil: visitors from 90 countries arrived in France in 2018 for a total of 220,000 overnight stays.

Four years ago, beyond the Alps, the economic movement amounted to 235.7 million euros. Golf remains one of the most popular sports in the world with 80 million golfers, seven of which in Europe alone. And in 2023 it will see Italy at the center of international attention.

A unique opportunity that will allow Italy to climb the ranking of golf tourism destinations. We are currently in tenth place with 1.8 million arrivals and 3.9 million presences (source Enit). More than a third of these tourists (1.6 million) travel accompanied.

The players are mostly men (68%) and women (25%) with an insignificant presence of children (7%). They sleep in hotels in 64% of cases, in resorts (23%) or in farmhouses (5.1%). Hotel accommodation has a strong weight for this segment: in fact, in 52.4% of cases there are hotel agreements and in 33.6% of cases hotel resorts and residences are chosen within the clubs.

The countries of origin of golf tourists in Italy are Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, France, Sweden, Denmark, USA, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Ireland, England, Belgium. “The world of golf is offering a great opportunity to Italian tourism – says Paolo Garlando, general manager of Italy Best Golf -.

With the arrival of the Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy’s visibility towards millions of golfing tourists from all over the world is growing month by month. We must be ready to intercept these flows. This is the context of our transversal network with which to create a system through digital “

“According to the projections of Italy Best Golf – continues Garlando – 65 million foreign tourists arrive in Italy every year. Of them no less than 5% play golf and travel accompanied: in 1.6% of cases the average cost (excluding travel) of 800 euros per person.

This is how we could reach an additional billion in tourism turnover in the post Ryder Cup, if we manage to create a system with a complete offer ”
