The 2022 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is featuring the return of a familiar face.
Legendary women’s champion Miki Sudo is returning to the fold after missing 2021 because she was pregnant. Sudo, who set the women’s record in 2020 at 48.5 hot dogs, will be looking to reclaim her belt from Michelle Lesco.
Joey Chestnut, meanwhile, is looking to break his 2021 record of a staggering 76 dogs in 10 minutes. He has broken his own record in each of the past two years, housing 75 in 2020 before one-upping himself last year. He’ll look to do so again.

12:57 p.m. — The over/under of 74.5 proves to be entirely too ambitious, as Chestnut finishes at 63 hot dogs unofficially. Esper finishes 20 off at 43.
12:56 p.m. — One minute left, Chestnut is nearly at 60 hot dogs. Esper passes 40.
12:55 p.m. — We’re at the two-minute warning and Chestnut leads by 17 hot dogs. Esper is approaching 40, while Webb is at 35.
12:54 p.m. — Chestnut is at the half-century mark with three minutes left.
12:52 p.m. — Unsurprisingly, Chestnut has made this a race for second place. Esper becomes the second to 30, while Webb and Wehny chase him. Chestnut is now at 48 with four minutes left.
12:51 p.m. — Chestnut is actually picking up his pace as he goes. He’s at 40 before the five-minute mark, but he’s off his record pace.
12:50 p.m. — Chestnut’s closest thing to a rival, Esper, is second to 20 3.5 minutes in. Chestnut is at 33.
12:49 p.m. — 2.5 in, Chestnut is at 24. Oji is on his tail with 17.
12:48 p.m. — Chestnut is at 10 hot dogs alongside Geoffrey Esper a minute in.
12:48 p.m. — And with the countdown we are underway!
12:41 p.m. — Joey Chestnut gets his incredibly dramatic introduction, as he looks to break his world record once again. We’re nearly underway in New York.
12:30 p.m. — Introductions are nearly underway for the men’s division, as George Shea begins to welcome the competitors.
12:14 p.m. — Joey Chestnut, on crutches, says he can “stand” and “eat.’ He seems good to go.
12:03 p.m. — The men’s division is starting to ramp up, as they prepare for introductions.
11:16 p.m. — Despite some immediate frustration after the contest, Sudo seems content and thanks the crowd for pushing her.
11:15 a.m. — Sudo remains undefeated in this contest, eight for eight. Lesco ultimately concedes the belt after a year.
11:12 a.m. — Sudo’s results are actually at 40 hot dogs, Lesco at 26 (a little over four fewer than last year), and Rodriguez finishes at 23.25.
11:10 a.m. — As time expires, Sudo reclaims her title from Lesco! After missing last year’s championship, Sudo returns and eats 39 hot dogs. Lesco comes in second at 25, and Rodriguez takes home the bronze at 22.
11:09 a.m. — It doesn’t look like Sudo is going to get to her record, but the bar with a minute left is 40.
11:09 a.m. — Lesco may not catch Sudo, but she smells blood in the water. She’s picking up her pace while Sudo’s has dropped.
11:07 a.m. — With about three minutes left, Sudo is at 30 hot dogs and she is looking for a second gear. Lesco becomes the second person to 20, while Rodriguez sits at 18.
11:05 a.m. — Now halfway through the competition, Sudo is at 24 hot dogs, 20 ahead of Rodriguez and Lesco. She’s about halfway to the record, but her pace has dropped off significantly from a fast start.
11:05 a.m. — Four minutes in, Sudo is already at 20 hot dogs but her pace is beginning to drop off.
11:04 a.m. — Sudo is now at approximately five hot dogs per minute. Rodriguez and Lesco are trying to keep this from being a runaway.
11:03 a.m. — Sudo is the first to 10 hot dogs 1 minute and 40 seconds in. She’s unsurprisingly setting the pace. Sara Rodriguez and Michelle Lesco are trying to keep up.
11:02 a.m. — Sudo immediately gets to work and she’s the first to five hot dogs. She has an early lead over a minute in.
11:01 a.m. — And with the countdown they get to work.
10:58 a.m. — The women’s division competitors are announced and have taken the stage. We’ll be underway shortly!
