Coach Patrick Mouratoglou says Roger Federer “effortlessly floats on grass” and adds the Swiss’ footwork is one of the main reasons behind his astonishing success on grass. The grass season is the shortest season on the ATP Tour calendar but Federer has managed to win 19 titles on the surface.
“It is no secret that Roger Federer is the best performer on grass courts with his 20 titles, including a record of 8 Wimbledon titles. With Wimbledon coming up round the corner, even though we won’t see Roger competing this year, lets talk about why the grass is his most winning surface,” Mouratoglou explained in a video uploaded on his Instagram.
“First, his footwork. Its a major contributor to his success. Federer is known to effortlessly float on the grass. He attacks the ball forward and follows his shots into the court. His centre of gravity, contrary to other players, is always perfectly aligned between his hips, allowing him to be perfectly balanced all the time.”
Federer owns a record eight Wimbledon titles
For many years, Federer was playing just two grass tournaments per year – Halle and Wimbledon.
In Halle, Federer is a record 10-time champion. At Wimbledon, Federer owns a record eight titles. Outside of Halle and Wimbledon, Federer won one title on the grass courts of Stuttgart in 2018. Federer lifted his maiden Grand Slam title at 2003 Wimbledon and then went on to win five consecutive titles at The Championships between 2003 and 2007.
In the 2008 Wimbledon final, Federer suffered a tight five-set loss to Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately, tennis fans won’t have a chance to see Federer at Wimbledon this year. Last August, Federer underwent a knee surgery.
Federer is making a good progress from his knee surgery but he didn’t want to rush his comeback and to try to play Wimbledon at any cost. Instead, Federer plans to return to action at the Laver Cup in September. Tennis fans are hoping Federer plays a full 2023 season and competes at Wimbledon for at least one more time.
