Russian Daniil Medvedev has encountered numerous difficulties this season. The tennis player began by losing the Australian Open, a tournament in which he started as a great favorite and in which he lost in the final despite the great advantage.
Few satisfactions and many important defeats in a year in which Daniil has not yet been seen at his best, but despite this, he has given the athlete new important satisfaction. As of this week, Medvedev is once again number one in the world and, given the lack of points awarded at Wimbledon and Alexander Zverev’s serious injury, the tennis player could maintain this position for a long time.
Just a few days ago, Medvedev suffered yet another defeat, in the final against Hertogenbosch tournament surprise Tim Van Rijthoven. Now Daniil starts again in Halle, where before the tournament the tennis player was celebrated with a cake and a nice interview to talk about his return to the top of the ATP ranking.
The Russian tennis player made the following statements: “I am happy to be number one and, in fact, I think I deserve it. The ATP ranking covers 52 weeks, not just one, also because otherwise we would have new number ones almost every week.”
Regarding a season in which so far there have been more disappointments than wins, Medvedev was clear: “Maybe it will be better here in Halle. I am getting better and better on grass and I am happy about it, this has always been my favorite surface.
It is true that I play better on concrete, where I can impose my game, but I like grass. I still have a lot of potential to express on this surface and I am constantly improving. Here it is more difficult to be able to respond and slow down my opponent’s pace, so the grass slows down one of my best skills.”
Novak Djokovic will lose further positions.
Woodforde speaks about Djokovic
Doubles legend Mark Woodforde picked the attributes of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic while building his perfect player.
“I think I’d have a look at Agassi’s forehand,” Woodforde said. “It’s hard not to kind of, you know, have a look at some of today’s players in that respect,” the 56-year-old said. Someone like a Djokovic’s backhand, pretty solid.
For a one-handed backhand though, I’d go with Edberg.” For return of serve, Woodforde went for Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray and stated that he was lucky to have never faced them in his career. “You know, I’ve never had to play against them, thank goodness because it would just enhance their return ability, having to return my little serve,” Woodforde continued.
“Djokovic, Murray and Nadal because where do you actually serve to, it’s very difficult to get a ball by those three players. Being greedy again, I’ll go with those three.”
