Doubles world No. 1 Joe Salisbury reveals he is allergic to grass but adds that is not stopping him from trying to win it all at The All England Club. Salisbury, 30, is a two-time Grand Slam champion in men’s doubles and he also has two Grand Slams in mixed doubles.
With his regular partner Rajeev Ram, Salisbury has claimed victories at the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 US Open, respectively. Now, the two are hoping to win their first Wimbledon title. “Grass, I’m allergic to it.
I’ve always had a few allergies — trees, dust, whatever,” Salisbury told The Daily Mail. “If I lie down on grass, I will get a skin reaction and it gets very itchy. It is not like I am dying but I wouldn’t sit on grass for too long.
I am trying to win Wimbledon for the first time and I’m allergic to grass, I get why it might sound strange.”
Salisbury fell just short of winning Wimbledon last year
Last year, Salisbury and Ram made their second appearance as a team at Wimbledon.
Salisbury and Ram enjoyed a deep run, which was ended by Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in the semifinal. Salisbury also had a deep run in the Wimbledon mixed doubles event as he and Harriet Dart made the final before losing to Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski.
This year, Salisbury will certainly be hoping to make deep runs in both men’s and mixed doubles events at Wimbledon. Salisbury and Ram haven’t played much this grass season as they are set to enter with just one tournament played leading up to the tournament.
Salisbury and Ram kicked off their grass season at the Queen’s Club, where they reached the quarterfinal before losing to Liam Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. It remains to be seen if Salisbury and Ram can go a step further this year and win Wimbledon.
