Lightning vs. Avalanche live score, updates, highlights from Game 3 of 2022 Stanley Cup Final

After a dominant showing by the Avalanche in Game 2, the Stanley Cup Final shifts to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning and Avalanche get set for Game 3 tonight. 

Colorado holds a 2-0 lead in the series. After a 4-3 overtime win in Game 1, the Avs played a near perfect game on Saturday night, putting up a touchdown in the 7-0 win over the Lightning.

Valeri Nichushkin and Cale Makar each had two goals, Mikko Rantanen registered three assists and Andre Burakovsky, Andrew Cogliano and Alex Newhook all had multi-point efforts. Burakovksy, Darren Helm and Josh Manson were the other three goal scorers as Darcy Kuemper stopped all 16 shots he faced in the victory. 

Now the Lightning have their backs nearly up against the wall. It’s not unfamiliar territory, as Tampa Bay fell behind 0-2 to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final before rattling off four straight wins. However, it’s fair to say the Avalanche are a much superior team to the Rangers and winning four games out of five is no easy task. 

“We’re not in a do-or-die situation right now,” Lightning forward Pat Maroon said before Game 3. “But let’s go out and find our best game now. They haven’t seen our best yet.”

While it’s not technically a “must-win”, a loss tonight puts them down 0-3 in the series. There has only been one time in NHL history that a team has come back from down three games in the finals to win the Cup and that was the 1942 Maple Leafs.

End 2nd period: Lightning 6, Avalanche 2

10:08 p.m.: End of the second and the Lightning will carry a commanding 6-2 lead into the final 20 minutes. Tensions are beginning to run high as there is an exchange between both squads ensue after a whistle with seconds left. Sergachev and Cogliano each assessed two minutes for roughing, so the third starts 4 on 4. But the Lightning are back and look like the back-to-back champs. 

10:02 p.m.: The Avs get another power play chance as Alex Killorn is whistled for slashing. Colorado is 2-for-2 so far tonight, a goal here puts them on the way to getting back in it. 

10:00 p.m.: GOAL! The floodgates have opened. A one-timer from Hedman gets deflected by Palat, goes off the post but Perry puts it in. The power play finally strikes for Tampa Bay as it’s 6-2 Lightning with five minutes left in the middle frame. 

9:57 p.m.: Tampa Bay is heading back to the power play as Nico Sturm shoots the puck out of play. 

9:50 p.m.: GOAL! What a move by Pat Maroon. Right out of the box, it’s a give and go with Kucherov before he cuts to the net, goes to the backhand and roofs it. Kuemper’s night is done as Pavel Francouz comes in relief. It’s 5-2 with under nine minutes left in the second. What a great response so far from the Lightning in Game 3. 

9:44 p.m.: Scary moment as it looks like Corey Perry gets tripped by Josh Manson right before Manson hits him. Perry’s slow to get up but gets to the bench. Manson and Maroon get into each and each are given two minutes for roughing. 

9:42 p.m.: GOAL! Lighting make it a two-goal game again as Steven Stamkos is left alone in front, spins and fires one past Kuemper. The Avs’ defense has not looked good tonight, that’s now three goals where they allow the Lightning to get a guy open in front. 4-2 Tampa Bay with about 12 minutes left in the 2nd. 

9:40 p.m.: Paul is down the tunnel. Again. 

9:35 p.m.: GOAL! Avs strike right back as it’s Landeskog again. He snipes it above the shoulder of Vasilesvkiy to make it a 3-2 game. The power play of Colorado continues to be lethal. 

9:32 p.m.: Down, but not out, Vasilesvkiy sprawls and makes a sensational toe save off a rebound. It’s Compher again with the chance, but the puck stays out. Right after play resumes, Colton is called for hooking so the Avs get a power play chance. They’re 1-for-1 so far tonight. 

9:29 p.m.: GOAL! How fitting, it’s Paul alone in front that beats Kuemper. He’s clearly playing through something, but he’s left wide open and makes the Avs’ defense pay. It’s 3-1 Lightning less than a minute and a half in. 

9:27 p.m.: Paul is out there skating before the 2nd, but he does not look 100% at all. He remains on the bench though, a good sign for the Lightning. 

End 1st period: Lightning 2, Avalanche 1

9:07 p.m.: Lightning end the first ahead 2-1. Tampa Bay finally looked like Tampa Bay. controlling the puck and playing solid in their own zone. They got a huge break early by getting the Nichushkin goal called back. Avs did have the shot advantage 14-12. 

9:03 p.m.: Didn’t see the play, but Paul hobbled off the ice and now is heading down the tunnel. That would not be a good loss for Tampa, he’s been great centering the forechecking line. 

8:58 p.m.: GOAL! Lightning pull ahead 2-1 thanks to a slick passing play off the rush that Palat finishes. An excellent feed from Stamkos as the two cross, sending Palat in all alone. The Lightning have their first lead of the series. 

8:51 p.m.: GOAL! After the Newhook penalty expires, Anthony Cirelly drives to the net and it sneaks through Kuemper. Not sure if Cirelli purposely mishandled, but it was effective. It’s 1-1 with under seven minutes to go. 

8:47 p.m.: Lightning get their second power play of the night as Alex Newhook is called for holding Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s stick. 

8:44 p.m.: GOAL! Avs strike on the power play as it’s Gabriel Landeskog cleaning up a rebound in front. Lightning allow Mikko Rantanen to walk in and Vasilevskiy can’t swallow up the puck, leaving it open in the crease for Landeskog to knock in. This one counts, 1-0 Colorado. 

8:38 p.m.: We’re going to 4 on 4 now as Ondrej Palat is called for high-sticking. There’s 41 seconds left on the Compher penalty before the Avs go on the power play. 

8:35 p.m.: Now the Lightning are going to the power play. Compher is whistled for interference after shoving down Stamkos in the slot. 

8:33 p.m.: No goal, puck just barely gets out of the zone before Byram can save it. A huge break for the Lightning who were inches away from being down 1-0 early yet again to the Avs. Here’s a look at the goal and the play at the blue line. 

8:28 p.m.: Avs strike first exactly five minutes into the game by guess who, Valeri Nichushkin. However the play is under review for offsides. That looks like the puck comes out of the zone before Bowen Byram can send it back in. 

8:26 p.m.: Two sensational saves by Vasilevskiy off an offensive zone draw. The shot from Makar at the point is tipped and he makes the pad save, then denies J.T. Compher on the rebound. 

8:24 p.m.: Great start for the Lightning. Ross Colton and Nick Paul each with a good look in the slot, but Kuemper comes up with the saves. No goals by the Avs in the first three minutes, so already an improvement from Game 2. 

8:20 p.m.: Puck is down, Game 3 is a go. This is all close of a must-win as you can get for the Lightning. 

Pregame

8:06 p.m.: Here’s how both sides line up for the opening draw. 

7:40 p.m.: No Point on the ice for warmups. Looks like he’ll sit out Game 3 after playing in the first two games of the series. Riley Nash is on the ice and figures to be his replacement. Also as expected for the Avs, no Kadri or Burakovsky. Nicolas AUbe-Kubel slides back into the lineup. 

7:00 p.m.: Andre Burakovsky is not in Tampa Bay. Coach Jared Bednar considers him “day-to-day”, in addition to Nazem Kadri. Burakovsky left Game 2 after getting hit in the hand with a puck. For the Lightning, Brayden Point is a game-time decision. He played in the previous two games, but did participate in morning skate.
