Australian tennis legend Rennae Stubbs is thrilled to see Serena Williams returning to action and likely finishing her career on her own terms. Last year, Williams was forced to retire her first round match at Wimbledon. 12 months later, Williams has announced her return to tennis.
Williams will play doubles in Eastbourne next week, before she heads to The All England Club for Wimbledon. “I am SO happy to hear Serena Williams is coming back!!! Never want to see a great champion limp off a court in tears and never return!!!!

Williams confirmed her comeback on Tuesday
On Tuesday, Williams shared on Instagram she intends to compete at Wimbledon. A few hours later, the Eastbourne organizers announced Williams would team up Ons Jabeur in their doubles event.
“I am excited to return to the Rothesay International tournament in England and to be back on the grass – a surface that has been so good to me throughout my career. Eastbourne has a unique charm that you don’t see anywhere else on Tour and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again,” Williams said in a statement.
Williams is set to play in Eastbourne for the third time in her career. Williams made her Eastbourne debut in 1998, when she reached the quarterfinal as a teenager. Williams returned to Eastbourne in 2011, but didn’t have much success, losing in the round-of-16.
“On behalf of everyone at the LTA we are delighted to warmly welcome Serena back to the Rothesay International and the fabulous setting of Devonshire Park, Eastbourne. This year’s line-up is proving absolutely stellar, where having Serena here will be the icing on the cake and personally, I’m sure I speak for many in that we can’t wait to see her play again,” Eastbourne tournament director Gavin Fletcher said.
