If at the end of the 72 holes there are two or more players at the top of the ranking with equal strokes, the winner is decided with a playoff. Until 2018, the playoffs, unlike the other majors, were held on Mondays over a distance of 18 holes: the player who finished this fifth round with the least number of strokes won the tournament.
If the tie persisted even after the 90 holes, the sudden death continued: the player who completed the ninety-first hole with an advantage over the opponent won the tournament. The use of sudden death was necessary on three occasions: in 1990, in 1994 and in 2008. As of the 2018 edition, the 18-hole playoff has been abandoned in favor of the two-hole playoff.
