British tennis star Emma Raducanu was forced to retire her Nottingham opener and after the match she revealed she sustained a “freak” injury in the opening game of the match versus Viktorija Golubic. Down 3-4 in her Nottingham opener versus Golubic, Raducanu walked up to the net and shook the hand of her Swiss opponent.

Raducanu sustained an injury to her left side in the opening game of the match and she required a medical intervention. “The first game, an absolute freak. I think I pulled something, I am not really sure what exactly happened,” Raducanu said, per iNews.

During her post-match press conference, Raducanu didn’t want to play the guess game. “I need to get a scan first,” Raducanu added. “I am not going to Google Doctor myself! I will get it checked out. Then we will see from there”.

Raducanu hopes it is nothing too serious

“It could have just seized up and gone into spasm and then it is really bad for a few days,” Raducanu said. Raducanu found herself down by an early break but she was able to break back Golubic before retiring the match.

After realizing she had sustained an injury in the opening game of the match – in front of British tennis fans – Raducanu admitted it was hard for her to quit the match after just one game played. “I was thinking ‘I don’t know how I am going to do this’,” Raducanu said.

“But if you do something [retire] in the first game people will be like ‘Well why did you walk on to the court’. I definitely tried to get through it but in the second game I called the physio on and at the first changeover she was trying to do some work but even from there she told me it was going to be really difficult to continue”.
