Paula Badosa begins Major campaign with a strong win over Fiona Ferro

Paula Badosa moved into the second round of the 2022 French Open on Tuesday with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over French wildcard, Fiona Ferro. The Spaniard, seeded third needed merely 54 minutes to seal the win. Badosa won 93% of her first-serve points and converted five of the six break points she had on Ferro’s serve.

She didn’t face any break point, either. She hit 25 winners, 19 more than Ferro and had 13 unforced errors, seven fewer than Ferro’s 20. In terms of forced errors, while Ferro had 10 of those, Badosa finished the match with six fewer.

In the second round, Badosa will play Kaja Juvan. The Strasbourg International finalist ousted qualifier, Oksana Selekhmetova, 7-5, 7-6(4) in their opener.

French Open: Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko march onwards

Meanwhile, two former Roland Garros champions, Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko also took their places in the round-of-64.

Halep, who won the title in 2018 and who’s seeded 19th this year, fended off resilient Nastasja Schunk in their first-round clash. The Romanian came from a break down in the opening set and was put through her paces in the second set by the German lucky loser before closing out the match in a one-sided third set.

After an hour and 48 minutes of play, Halep won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. In the second round, the former world no. 1 will meet Qinwen Zheng. Ostapenko, the 2017 champion in Paris had an easier outing into the second round. The Latvian 13th seed completed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Italian Lucia Bronzetti in 67 minutes.

France’s Alize Cornet will be Ostapenko’s next opponent. Cornet dominated Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-0 in 58 minutes in their opener. Tamara Zidansek also advanced to the second round. The Slovenian, seeded 24th, who’d reached the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open defeated the Rabat Open finalist, Claire Liu 6-2, 6-2 in their opening-round match.
