World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has revealed that various options are being discussed regarding Wimbledon ranking status and admitted that he is not sure “what is right and what is wrong.” Wimbledon’s decision to impose bans on Russian and Belarusian players did not sit well with the ATP and WTA.
Now there is reportedly a strong possibility that the ATP decides to strip Wimbledon of its ranking status, meaning Wimbledon entrants would not receive points this year. “I guess now it’s the players council, the tour management, who has to decide together with the players what is the best solution in this situation, whether to keep the points, protect them, take 50% of the points or whatever.
“Djokovic said, according to Sportskeeda. “In the last two years, due to the coronavirus, there was a reduction in points, and different, I guess, models were put in place that weren’t put in place before because of Covid to allow players not to play if they don’t want to play but still have their points.
So I’ve heard that some of those models are still considered to be, you know, used in these types of cases, but, you know, I’m not sure what’s right, what’s wrong, to be honest. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see the result.”
In Rome, Nadal was also asked about the possibility of Wimbledon losing its ranking status. Both Djokovic and Nadal have made it quite clear that they do not support Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players.
“There are some private conversations in the council about this kind of thing, which I honestly think is not a good thing to be made public.
Djokovic won in Rome for the sixth time
On Tennis Channel Live, Andy Roddick stated that Novak Djokovic’s ability to rein down his errors, particularly in tiebreaks, is peerless.
He said: “The second-set tiebreaker was vintage Novak. He’s able to lock down the errors, may be better than anyone I have seen in the history of the game. Playing safe, but still moving the ball around, getting the patterns he wants.
When the pressure mounts, being able to get your pattern is important. He does that as well as anyone.” Roddick added: “Why I appreciate the Big 3, winning matches you are supposed to win all the time is difficult with that pressure, and he just went through it again.
Second serve was tight. Was barely getting above.70 miles an hour in the second-set tiebreaker, but he went into lockdown mode.”
