The Hurricanes appear as though they will be playing a second playoff game in a row without starting goaltender Frederik Andersen.
After not playing in Game 1, there has been no update on Andersen’s situation. At morning skate on Wednesday ahead of Game 2, it was Antti Raanta back in the starter’s crease, looking like he will make his second consecutive start.
Andersen has been dealing with a lower-body injury that he suffered in a game against the Avalanche on April 16. Andersen skated for what Brind’Amour called a “twirl” on Sunday. It was the first time he had taken the ice since the injury occurred.
“I’m progressing a little bit in terms of some of the movements I’m trying to do,” Andersen said Sunday. “I’m not really close to what I’d like to be out there yet. But another day in the books and I’m trying to get better and get back.
“It’s a tough time to get hurt, obviously. This is when all the extra fun begins. I still have some work to do to get back. I’m trying my best to come back and help the guys.”
The goaltender has been fantastic in his first season in Raleigh. After a signing a two-year deal in the offseason, Andersen finished the season with a 34-14-3 record, 2.17 GAA and .922 SV%. He likely will be a top-three finalist for the Vezina Trophy.

Who is the starting goaltender for the Hurricanes in Game 2?
With Andersen out again, the Hurricanes turn to Raanta for Game 2. The 32-year-old made his first career playoff start on Monday, stopping 35 of the 36 shots he faced in Carolina’s 5-1 win over Boston.
Raanta was fantastic during the regular season and while it’s early in the playoffs, seems to be replicating it in the postseason.. He went 15-5-4 with a 2.45 GAA and a .912 SV%, as he and Andersen earned the William M. Jennings Trophy as the league’s best goaltending duo.
When will Frederik Andersen return?
The timetable for an Andersen return is still unknown.
Considering that Andersen said he was not as close to a return as he would have liked, it leaves some speculation as to whether he’ll be ready sooner rather than later.
The next chance for Andersen to play will be Game 3 on Friday.
