Jon Rahm completes the work and wins the Mexico Open in Vallarta. At his 123rd career appearance, the Spaniard celebrated his seventh title (figure including a Major, the US Open 2021) on the PGA Tour. On the Vidanta Vallarta route (par 71), the world number 2 with a total of 267 (64 66 68 69, -17), he overtook the competition of Americans Brandon Wu, Kurt Kitayama (for both this is the best result on the maximum US men’s circuit) and Tony Finau (runner up for the ninth time on the PGA Tour) , all second with 268 (-16).
Fifth place with 269 (-15) for Davis Riley. Sixth (270, -14) for Aaron Wise, David Lipsky, Alex Smalley and Cameron Champ. Another American, Patrick Rodgers, closes the Top 10 with 271 (-13).
Jon Rahm, Mexico Open
Wire-to-wire success for Rahm.
In the lead from the first to the fourth round, the 27-year-old from Barrika in the last 18 holes has achieved a score of 69 (-2), with three birdies and a bogey. The exploit earned him $ 1,314,000 against a prize pool of $ 7,300,000.
Another feat for Rahm who, since 2017, has always won at least one tournament a year on the PGA Tour. Since June 20, 2021 (when he triumphed at the US Open), this is however Rahm’s first seal that, after a long domination, in 2022 it lost world leadership.
But the Iberian, thanks to this statement, returned to focus on first place, but still firmly in the hands of Scottie Scheffler. He was the number one favorite on the eve of the tournament, but as you know, playing as favorites in this sport is not always a guarantee of victory.
Instead at the Mexico Open 2022, Jon Rahm managed to lead the standings after each of the four laps, returning to success after almost a year of fasting. It was certainly not the best tournament for the Spaniard who made some mistakes in this last lap, including a very risky tee shot on the last hole that risked compromising his result.
In the end he closed with a total score of -17, built mainly in the first two laps. The Americans Tony Finay and Brandon Wu hoped for a playoff until the end, still in the clubhouse with a score of -16, always waiting for an error by the Spaniard.
In the end, Kurt Kitayama joins the group of players in second place, the most dangerous for Rahm, but author of two bogeys in the second nine.
