The Champions League final will no longer take place at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg. UEFA will announce tomorrow the relocation of this meeting, putting itself at the same time on the back of one of its main sponsors, the natural gas supplier Gazprom. The Russian company has also had a strong commitment for 15 years with Schalke 04, but the German club has taken the decision to remove the name of this sponsor from its shirt.
“Following recent events, FC Schalke 04 has decided to remove the logo of main sponsor GAZPROM from the club shirts. It will be replaced by the inscription “Schalke 04” instead., says the press release from the Gelsenkirchen club. Earlier in the day, management had already informed of the resignation of Matthias Warnig, a member of the club’s supervisory board delegated by Gazprom.
