After two years of sleep, the Gambardella Cup has resumed its rights. The 32nd finals even took place this weekend. Here are the results.
La Gambardella is finally back. After two absences due to the pandemic, the competition has resumed its rights and since mid-December, it is the turn of the teams of the national U19 championship to make their entry. There have already been some surprises with the elimination of Guingamp, Le Mans, Orléans, Toulon, Versailles, Vertou and Mérignac, dismissed by regional opponents. Place the 32nd finals, which took place this weekend, also with unexpected results. Resident of National, Istres was particularly surprised on the lawn of the Olympique de Valence, team of Regional 1. Valence offers itself the feat and thus prolongs the epic.
The shock between LOSC and PSG to reserve all its promises, then the Parisians were deprived of Lavallée and Bitshiabu, traveling with the pros, in Lyon. While the capital club was surprised just before the break thanks to a superb goal from Victor Polli for the Mastiffs (1-0, 45th + 1), Odobert (1-1, 87th) snatched the equalizer in the last moments. After a controlled penalty shootout (4-2), PSG qualified for the Round of 16.
Olympique Lyonnais qualified, not OM
Victorious over Saint-Etienne, the last winner of the competition, in Derby in the previous round, Olympique Lyonnais continues their race in the Gambardella Cup after their victory against Metz. Thanks to a double from Lagha (3-0, 31st and 68th) and an achievement by Fougeu (48th), who offered the goal of the break, the Gones win and the reduction of Metz’s score in added time was anecdotal.
On the other hand, Olympique de Marseille was eliminated from the competition on penalties. While the Corsicans and the Marseillais were tied at the end of regulation time (1-1), Ajaccio finally won on penalties with a victory 4 shots on goal to 2. The draw for the round of 16 will be held on Thursday January 13 for meetings which will take place on Sunday January 30, the same weekend as the Coupe de France.
