It is that time of the year when Nigeria’s best junior players gather at Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos, to test their wits against their peers from across the country.
The event is the Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Championship, which offers some of the biggest prizes available in Nigeria’s junior circuit.
According to organisers of the competition, players were expected to arrive at the club yesterday for accreditation and practice ahead of the tee-off billed for 6.30 a.m. today.
According to the programme, players are expected to take their breakfast from 5.45 a.m., while the ceremonial tee-off will hold by 8.00 a.m.
After breakfast tomorrow morning, the players are expected to take to the course from 6.30 a.m., go for lunch from 12.00 p.m., while prizes would be presented to winners from 5.00 p.m. Sunday is departure day.
According to the organising committee, the Eighth Awa Ibrahheem Junior Open Championship is categorised into ages six to eight, nine to 10, 11 to 13 and 14 to 17 years.
“Being a world ranking event, ages 14 to 17 years will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday. Cut may be made after 36 holes for this category.
“Ages 11 to 13 years will play 18 holes each day for Friday and Saturday, while Ages nine to 10 years will play nine holes each day for Friday and Saturday. Lastly, ages 6 to 8 will play nine holes each day for Friday and Saturday.”
The organising committee advised any player that wishes to play at a higher age level than his own to signify his intention between yesterday and 2.00 p.m today, adding, “This wish must be supported by his/her parents and coach. Any change effected cannot be reversed during the game.”
The committee disclosed that different tee box markers would be used with cognisance to age level category, adding that the form of play is stroke play.
The committee also advised all intending players to come along with their birth certificates or proof of age.
