Athletes from Oyo State and an Ibadan-based school that is renowned for relay races, Brightville College gave good account of themselves at the recently held AFN All Comers Athletics Championship at the Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State.
Oyo, led to the event by the State’s Athletics Association Chairman, Dr. Isaac Ogada, booked slots to participate at the AFN classics in Ado Ekiti, while Brightville College of Oyo State emerged first with an impressive time of 49:00seconds in the 4×100m relay girls among many invited secondary schools from South-South/West states.
Oyo athletics boss in his reaction after the event described the All-Comers Championship as a good tune-up competition that would kick start Nigeria’s preparations for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“Nigerian sprint stars such as Enoch Adegoke, Alaba Akintola, Joy Udoh Gabriel and others all converged here to indicate their readiness for the Olympic qualification, while the national athletics technical officials were all also on ground and did justice to the various events, which include track and field,” Dr. Ogada noted.
He said the AFN leadership, led by Olamide George, expressed their resolve in ensuring that athletes’ welfare would henceforth be their priority, saying it is a very good development.
Ogada gave an insight into his personal efforts in developing athletics in the state. “All those children are newly discovered, nurtured and now being exposed. As a matter of fact, they have been given an invitation to the national camp to fight for spots in the forthcoming African and championships”.
