The initiator of the Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament, Lizzy Afonja has dispelled the insinuation that the tournament was conceptualised for monetary gain, saying it was initiated to help fight the societal scourge.
Afonja, a veteran golfer, made the clarification while speaking at the end of the event held at the Ibadan Golf Club.
She thanked the major sponsor of the event, Akogun Tunde Afolabi for supporting the idea of instituting a golf tournament to raise awareness and enlighten golfers on how they can prevent the deadly ailment.
Meanwhile, retired Commissioner of Police, Lateef Junaid playing handicap 17 and the sensational Evelyn Oyome, as well as Mrs. Ranti Olurin, a veteran amateur golfer, emerged winners in different categories of the event.
Junaid won the best net with gross 83 and 66 net and Oyome, playing handicap six dominated the female category by winning the nearest to the pin (hole) and longest drive (hole 18) with a best gross of 80, while Mrs. Olurin emerged the best net in the veteranladies category with 113 gross and 85 net.
The winners went home with exciting prizes, while two cancer survivors also won for themselves all expense paid trip to Dubai courtesy of travel and tour outfit, Ufit Fly. Apart from the golf action, Dr. R. O. Oduwole and Alhaji Yusuf Issa also came to share their knowledge with players during a lecture session organised on the first day of the event. Many others also shared positive testimonies on the advice received during the maiden Cancer Awareness Golf event.
