Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has urged the Super Eagles to approach all their matches with determination, tact and unity of purpose, so as to come out victorious in the African Cup of Nations.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki said the 22-man squad should know that they represent the hope of their countrymen and women to once again enjoy the pleasure of having the prestigious cup return to Nigeria after six years.
“The Super Eagles players and their coaches should know that their performance has the potential to further strengthen the unity of Nigeria as their fellow citizens usually come together and forget the differences that abide in the country during top football competitions in which the national team is featuring.
“Also, winning the African Cup of Nations is always an opportunity for our country to assert her position as the leader in the continent. The challenge before the team in Egypt is to make us proud and present us with the chance to once again prove our leadership position on the continent.
“That is why Captain Mikel Obi and his colleagues as well as Coach Gernot Rohr and other members of the coaching crew should do all that is possible to make Nigeria proud and ensure that they win the seven matches, starting from the group stages to the final match, necessary for us to lift the cup”, he stated.
While calling on all Nigerians to support the Super Eagles with prayers, Saraki also advised the players and the supporters who are going to Egypt to always be at their best both on and outside the field of play.
Meanwhile, former Nigerian captain, Henry Nwosu has charged the Super Eagles not to underrate Burundi in their opening game today, warning that the debutants would be eager to outshine the Super Eagles against all odds.
The former Golden Eaglets manager also predicted that Burundi would come into the game like wounded lions to make a bold statement in the AFCON.
“The Super Eagles should approach the game against Burundi with seriousness. The Eagles should not underestimate Burundi.
“From my experience at the Nations Cup, any team that qualified for the championship cannot be a pushover. Eagles should approach every game with enough zeal,” he said.
