A total of 42 top scrabble players in Nigeria, last weekend, competed at the Adowei scrabble Classics as part of efforts to discover more stars in the game.
Ebikeme Adowei, who is also the President of Lekki Scrabble Club, put the event together to celebrate his 40th birthday. It took place at VGC Club, and was filled with fanfare as all participants competed against each other.
Adowei noted that he decided to organise the event to create more awareness about scrabble in the country, and also to encourage the young ones get into the game. He said that it would go a long way to enhancing their intellectual capacity.
He further stated that his passion for the game had pushed him to support other scrabble events in any capacity to make the sport more respected and recognised in Nigeria.
Adowei commended Team Nigeria Scrabble players for their effort to putting Nigeria on the world map in the game of scrabble.
“The game of Scrabble is interesting and intellectually driven. I have been playing the game for the past ten years, and that is why I organised the event at my 40th birthday. Although, it is a tradition for scrabble players to play with their friends on their birthdays, but my intention to put this together is to showcase to Nigerians that scrabble is a mind game that educationally uplift the intellect of an individual. I also want more Nigerians to get into the game.”
He called on parents to also encourage their wards to play scrabble in a bid to improving their learning capability at a formative stage.
At the event, the coach of the National Scrabble team, Prince Anthony Ikolo, who commended Adowei for working hard to raise the standard of scrabble in Nigeria, revealed that the final list of players selected for the English Scrabble players championship (WESPA) taking place October in Goa, India would be released soon. He stated that the Adowei Classics was another forum to keep Nigeria scrabble players in shape.
