The final leg of the Chevron Junior Tennis Workshop and Enlightenment Programme for students between the ages of 12 and 16 will run from today to Wednesday at the Abuja National Stadium Tennis Centre.

The programme is aimed at introducing the sport to at least 100 students in six target communities across Nigeria and also giving them some tips to make a success of their lives and to be very good and civilised citizens. The programme previously held in Lagos alone.

Besides teaching the students the five major strokes of the game of tennis – the serve, forehand and backhand, the volley and smash – the programme also aims to identify talent for further development.

According to the director of the International Tennis Academy (ITA), which runs the programme, “the participants should be able to appreciate and follow the sport intelligently, take it up for recreation or become tournament players.“The programme has held in Lagos, Warri, Akure and Port Harcourt already and everywhere we went was oversubscribed. That tells me our young ones are hungry for sports programmes that will benefit, engage and empower them and possibly change their lives for good,” Kienka added.
