Memphis Depay was the star of the night as Netherlands beat minnows Luxembourg on Sunday in a World Cup qualifying match.

The Manchester United player who is yet to start a game for his club this season came on as a substitute scoring a second-half brace for a 3-1 win in Luxembourg city.

Veteran Arjen Robben had put the Dutch ahead on the 36th, but 130th-ranked Luxembourg leveled on the stroke of half-time with a penalty from Maxime Chanot.

The visitors were without the influential Robben after the break as the Bayern Munich winger seemingly picked up yet another injury, a big loss given that Robben had scored five times in the four internationals.

Depay, who replaced Wesley Snijder, then came on for the second half, headed the second in the 58th minute by heading home a cross from Daley Blind.

The 22-year-old then came close again and eventually clinched victory with a curling free-kick with six minutes left.

The Dutch improved to seven points from four games in Group A, tied with Sweden who lost 2-1 at leaders France (10) in a match brought forward to Friday because France wanted to avoid playing on the first anniversary of the Paris terror attacks Sunday.
